Lets make this New Year the best ever for those who need a little help in South County. If we resolve to do a little more volunteering this year, your Foundation will have a great year. This will result in the award of nearly 50 Grants in April.

If each of us mentions to friends and neighbors the importance of the Foundation to the quality of life for many in South County, our membership will grow. The impact we have on the less fortunate in South County will  be overwhelming. As we welcome in 2018, let us all resolve to “Make a Difference”.

Please stop by the office or speak to any board member about the best way you can get involved to “Make a Difference” in the local community and enjoy the rewards of service. The rewards do not expire...they last a lifetime.

New Staff -  Stop in the PCF office and say "Hello" and "Welcome" to Lynn Bessell.  Lynn brings several year's of administrative experience in both the corporate and non-profit areas, with a strong background of data entry, organization, and time management, to the Foundation.  Lynn will be assisting Dorothy Piteo in the office.  They are in full swing working on the 2018 Celebrity Classic and Annual Fashion Show.

Lynn and her husband Wayne retired to Florida in 2013 and reside in Englewood.  She previously worked for Ontario ARC, a non-profit, that offered services to the developmentally disabled in Canandaigua, New York.  In addition, Lynn was a licensed real estate agent in New York and Florida.

2017 Impact Grant

In the Spring of 2017, the Plantation Community Foundation generously partnered with Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County, Inc. to launch a new home revitalization program, "A Brush with Kindness". Through the PCF’s $16,000 impact grant and paint donated by Sherwin-Williams, volunteers will paint one home for a qualified homeowner per month.  You do not need to be handy with a paint brush to volunteer for this project. Give back to the community.  Gather your friends and contact the PCF office to be a part of "A Brush with Kindness".

Pictured are the volunteers working at the first home.  The recipient, Melvin Smoke, is a career veteran with the U.S. Air Force and a two time cancer survivor. Melvin has volunteered with over eight organizations and is very happy to be on the receiving end.

The second recipients are a father and son who have disabilities and need the assistance of the program.  Pictured below are volunteers working at the second home.  This time Habitat opened up volunteership to their partner families and they had a great turnout!

On Saturday, November 18, several PCF volunteers helped paint the third home.  Contact the PCF office to add your name to the list to once again "Make a Difference".

If you know of someone who qualifies for this program, please contact Brian Scott at (941) 493-6606 ext. 226 for an application. For more information on A Brush with Kindness program, contact Habitat SSC Construction Manager, Michael Sollitto at (941) 493-6606 ext. 231.

2018 Celebrity Golf Classic

The Celebrity Classic is celebrating its 26th year.  There are no membership or ability requirements. The area’s largest and best sports event, held on February 7th and 8th, is open to all golfers.  It is a “handicapped” scramble with at least one celebrity per team.   Once again, there will be an outstanding field of approximately 75 well-known celebrities.  Among those planning to attend this year are Sam Jones, Rico Petrocelli, Gary Bell, Jacques Lemaire, Tony Oliva, Luis Tiant, Bill Gullickson, Bob Harrigan, Don Schwall, “Sudden Sam” McDowell, Danny McManus, Gary Peters, Jim Perry, Tim Fox, Pat Richter, Steve Shutt and Bill “Spaceman” Lee.
The “Classic” begins on Wednesday evening with a cocktail party where players and their guests have the opportunity to meet and socialize with the celebrities.  On Thursday morning, we have the Otto Graham Memorial Putting Contest followed by lunch, golf, and the awards banquet.
Playing Sponsorships of $375 are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  As a Playing Sponsor, you will receive a playing spot in the Classic, a shirt and hat, and invitations for you and one guest to attend the Wednesday evening cocktail party and the Thursday evening awards banquet.  This year, all male participants will play from the White/Gold combo tees.
Sign-up and pay on-line through our website or pickup an entry form at the PCF office.  Sign up as an individual or make up your own foursome.  Our goal for 2018 is to exceed the 2017 number of participants.

If you would like to volunteer or donate an item for the silent or live auctions, please call the PCF office at 497-4826, Ron Noble at 497-3087, or Dick Butler at 508-769-7877.  With your support we will make this the best “Classic” ever.

Don't forget to stop by the pro shop any morning and purchase chances for the Golf Cart being raffled off at the Celebrity Classic!!

Grant Committee

It’s January already and that means it’s time to get busy with PCF grant requests!  Members of the 2018 Grant Committee are about to begin selecting this year’s grant recipients. It is expected that $120,000 from fundraising efforts will be awarded to those social service, health, education, environmental and cultural organizations throughout South County that are deemed worthy of funding.

On January 5th, the important work of vetting, evaluating and funding PCF grant proposals will get underway.  PCF President, Bob Hayden, will charge the committee, asking them to become “honest advocates” for the 50 applicants.  Grant Committee Chair, Kathy Mason, will welcome the ten members and review the process for conducting site visits to each organization, presenting their findings to the committee, and applying a weighted matrix to the selection process.

Veteran members, Patsy Scuzzo and Kathy Mason will present the first proposals from Venice Area Mobile Meals, Inc. and Venice Area Pregnancy Care Center, Inc. as the group begins identifying this year’s awardees.   Recipients will be announced publicly at the Annual Awards Luncheon on April 11.

2018 Committee members, who will be meeting every Friday morning from early January through the end of March, include: Sue Allison, Fran Belcuore, Pam Clark, Drew Ermelin, Pat Hurley, Ray Leather, Jack Schemm, Patsy Scuzzo, Judy Thuer, and Cindy Williams.
